England's World Cup win smashes BBC viewership record at 2am

England's 3-2 knockout victory against Mexico pulled in 9.1 million people at half two in the morning. Yeah, you read that right — nearly a third of the country was apparently awake to watch this thing.

The Round of 16 match aired on BBC One and BBC iPlayer during those bonkers early hours, and it's now the biggest live audience the Beeb's ever recorded in that time slot. Between 2am and 4am BST, nothing comes close. People were genuinely up at that hour watching football.

It's the kind of number that makes broadcasters sit up and pay attention. Despite the delayed kick-off messing with normal viewing patterns, folks still showed up in droves. Bellingham and Kane apparently had enough star power to drag half the nation out of bed.

The match itself was proper entertaining, which probably helped. Three goals for England, two for Mexico — not some dull 1-0 snoozefest that'd put you back to sleep anyway. When your team's playing in a World Cup knockout, and they're winning 3-2, you're probably not switching off.

Scheduling matches at ridiculous hours because of time zones isn't new, but the viewership still caught people off guard. Major tournaments always pull big numbers, but hitting 9.1 million at that time of night is genuinely unusual territory for British television. The average across the whole match was pretty solid too, though the peak hit that 9.1 mark.

So yeah, England's still got it when it comes to pulling an audience. Doesn't matter if they're kicking off at 2am or teatime.
