Mourinho's back: Real Madrid turns to Special One after messy 13 years away

José Mourinho is heading home to the Bernabéu. The 63-year-old manager just left Benfica to take over at Real Madrid on a three-year deal, marking his return to the club where he spent three seasons between 2010 and 2013.

Real Madrid needed a reset badly. Last season was basically a disaster—Xabi Alonso got the sack in January after players started turning on each other, Álvaro Arbeloa stepped in as a band-aid solution, and nothing worked. The team crashed out of the Champions League to Bayern Munich in the quarters and watched Barcelona storm past them to claim La Liga. Plus there was that whole incident where Fede Valverde landed in hospital needing stitches after some kind of row with Aurélien Tchouaméni during training. Yeah, it was that bad.

So Mourinho comes in as the supposed fixer. He's got a track record of walking into troubled clubs and sorting out the chaos—that's kind of his thing. At Benfica, he was doing fine, but when Real Madrid came calling, it was too big to pass up. The club's won 15 European Cups, and they want another one. Fast.

Marco Silva's taking over at Benfica as Mourinho's replacement, so at least that's settled.

The timing is weirdly interesting. Mourinho's had his ups and downs over the last decade—some brilliant spells, some messy exits, a lot of drama. Real Madrid's problems aren't exactly small-time either. They've got quality all over the pitch but something's broken in how they work together. Whether Mourinho can fix that or just add more theater to the mix? We'll find out soon enough.
