Doctor Who faces its biggest test yet as Russell T Davies walks away
Russell T Davies is out as Doctor Who showrunner after viewership collapsed and the Christmas special got axed. The BBC's got a real problem on its hands.
The BBC just pulled the plug on its Doctor Who Christmas special and ended things with showrunner Russell T Davies. Not exactly shocking, given the rumour mill's been churning for weeks, but still—it's a massive deal for the show.
Here's the thing: viewership has hit rock bottom. The show's having an identity crisis. And then there's that weird Billie Piper cliffhanger nobody really asked for. Whoever steps in next? They're inheriting a proper mess.
Davies posted on Instagram that he's excited to see what's next, which is basically the TV equivalent of "it's not you, it's me." The partnership with Bad Wolf production company is done. The BBC insists Doctor Who still matters to them—they want the Tardis to land "in all its glory" when it returns. Sure. But the numbers don't lie, and right now they're pretty grim.
What's wild is that nobody even seemed to be filming a Christmas special, which should've been obvious to anyone paying attention. You can't just knock out a Doctor Who episode in a couple months. The post-production alone takes forever. The lack of activity on set was basically confirmation that something had already fallen apart behind closed doors.
Bad Wolf could theoretically pitch for the show under new leadership, but Davies seems genuinely done. He's not sticking around to salvage this thing. That's telling.
So now the BBC's hunting for someone brave (or stupid) enough to take over a show with crumbling viewership, confused fans, and zero momentum heading into its next era. The glory days feel pretty far away right now.
