Declan Rice vows Arsenal will return stronger after Champions League heartbreak

Arsenal's midfield general isn't ready to accept defeat. Not yet anyway. Declan Rice has already promised the club will be back for another crack at the Champions League next season, even after watching PSG lift the trophy following a brutal penalty shootout in Budapest.

The Gunners reached their first European final since 2006, which counts as genuine progress under Mikel Arteta's watch. But it ended the way these things often do when you're the team without the experience—Gabriel Magalhães stepped up for the decisive kick and missed. PSG celebrated. Arsenal went home with the Premier League title as consolation.

Rice and his teammates paraded that domestic trophy through north London anyway. You'd think that'd sting less, except it probably doesn't. Champions League finals don't come around every year, and when they do, you're supposed to win them.

The 25-year-old's defiance matters though. He's the kind of player who sets a tone in the dressing room, and if he's already talking about coming back stronger rather than dwelling on what went wrong, that's the mentality Arsenal need right now. Arteta apparently backed that up in the aftermath, telling his squad he loves them all and to keep their heads up. Fair enough.

Arsenal have had a weird relationship with the Champions League for years—they've played more games in it than any other club without winning it. Reaching a final was meant to feel like breaking through. Instead it just highlights how much further they've got to go. PSG's experience showed. Their shootout composure was sharper. Their squad depth, their European pedigree—it all mattered when penalties came around.

But Rice's right about one thing. If Arsenal can get back here next season with another Premier League title under their belt, they'll have learned something. They'll know what it takes. And unlike some teams that flame out after a loss like that, Arteta's group seems built to bounce back properly. They're young enough. They're hungry enough. They've got the resources.

Whether that translates into actual silverware next May is another question entirely. But at least someone in that squad is already thinking ahead instead of spiraling.
