Kompany's out for Bayern's Arsenal showdown — virus has him sidelined

Vincent Kompany won't be on the sideline when Bayern Munich takes on Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. The Bayern boss is dealing with a nasty virus that's knocked out his legs, and the club's told him to rest up.

He missed training on Tuesday, which basically tells you everything you need to know about how rough he's feeling. His assistant Aaron Danks handled the pre-match press conference instead — never a great sign when the manager can't show up for that.

This thing's been brewing since Saturday's 6-1 demolition of RB Leipzig. Kompany got through that game but barely. Reports out of Germany say he literally had to crash on his sofa after the match, and the virus apparently aggravated an existing hip issue. Walking became a nightmare. Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl had to do the post-match talking rather than Kompany, which was the first red flag.

So now Danks is stepping up to take charge against Arsenal in the Champions League. It's not ideal timing — the Gunners are no joke — but Bayern's got the depth to handle it. Kompany's health comes first anyway. These viral infections that mess with your mobility aren't something you just push through, especially when you've already got a hip problem lurking in the background.

Whether Kompany makes it back for upcoming matches depends on how quickly this clears up. For now, rest is the only prescription.
